Can I safely transfer SSD and RAM from an old laptop to a new one?

I recently purchased a new laptop and I’m considering transferring the SSD and RAM from my old laptop, which stopped working suddenly. I’m not sure what caused the old laptop to break down. Is there a risk of damaging the new laptop by adding these old components? Also, how can I safely erase the SSD before using it?

You can erase the SSD using an external case or docking station. As for upgrading, make sure the SSD type is compatible with your new laptop’s specifications.

Adding old hardware can pose risks if not done correctly. Make sure to disconnect the battery before opening your laptop and verify that the RAM is compatible (e.g., DDR4 vs DDR5). Consider professional help if you’re unsure.

I’m experienced with hardware changes but unsure if the old SSD or RAM could be faulty and potentially harm the new laptop. Also, how can I ensure the SSD is completely erased?

Insert the SSD into an external enclosure and use software tools to perform a secure erase. This will ensure all data is wiped before installation.

Should I also disconnect the battery if I’m just adding RAM?

It’s always safer to disconnect the battery when making any internal changes to prevent any electrical issues or accidental short circuits.

Optane memory can be complex to set up, but modern NVMe SSDs offer similar performance and might be a better choice for simplicity and support.

If you’re looking for reliable and fast storage, consider newer NVMe SSDs, which might be more reliable than reusing an old SSD, especially if its health is unknown.

What brands would you recommend for new NVMe SSDs?

@Hart
Samsung, Western Digital, and Crucial are all reputable brands with reliable products.
