Can This Laptop Run Minecraft Smoothly … Need Advice for My Sister's First Computer

I’m planning to surprise my little sister with her first laptop. She’s been wanting one for a while, but our parents are hesitant to spend too much. I’ve found an option within my budget. Will this laptop run Minecraft smoothly if I install Optifine on it? I appreciate any guidance!

It might not perform as well as you’d hope…

Thanks for the input! There’s a shop nearby that sells used laptops. I’m thinking of checking it out.

That sounds like a good plan. You might find some reliable Lenovo ThinkPads there, like the T480, which are affordable and perform well.

@Pax
Appreciate the suggestion! I remember the person at the store mentioning they had either Acer or Lenovo. I’ll find out more.

I’d steer clear of Acer, based on my experiences. They tend not to be very reliable.

@Pax
No worries, that’s exactly why I came here for advice. Thanks for the heads-up!

@Pax
Just to add, ThinkPads are not really the cheapest out there. They’re actually mid to high-end laptops known for their durability.

Look for a laptop with a Ryzen CPU, ideally 3rd generation or newer, and at least 8GB of RAM. These specs should handle Minecraft quite well.

Thanks! I’m really hoping to make this work for her, even though it’s proving to be quite expensive.

What’s your budget? Maybe I can help you find something more specific. Also, are you purchasing in the US?

Yes, I’m in the US. I’m trying to keep it under around $265, which I know is tight. I’ve been looking at open box deals everywhere but it’s tough.

@Quin
If you’re okay with refurbished models, you might find a Ryzen 5 5500u laptop within your budget. For instance, here’s a link to one I found on eBay that would fit your needs and budget.

Alternatively, consider a second-hand Xbox Series S. It’s great for Minecraft and other similar games.

@Vic
That’s a solid suggestion for gaming, but if she needs the laptop for school or other activities, the Xbox won’t cover those needs.

I’d avoid Acer and HP as they tend to have performance issues.

How about HP Elitebooks?

Elitebooks are decent, especially if you don’t get a lemon. Just be cautious with the model and its reviews.

Agreed. My Acer laptop died just after the warranty expired. Not going down that road again.

I recommend looking into business laptops from Lenovo and HP, but definitely skip Acer.
