A few months after downloading a custom cursor, my classmate’s computer started having issues. We’re trying to figure out if the cursor could be the cause.
Custom cursors containing viruses are a well-known issue. You might want to prepare a USB drive with a Windows image to reinstall the system. Be cautious with what you install and who uses your machine.
@Elliot
I’ve never used custom cursors myself. Are they really known for causing issues?
@Elliot
It happened several months later, so it could be due to various reasons.

Indeed, it’s quite an assumption to pin the blame on the cursor. People tend to make arbitrary connections which can lead to incorrect conclusions.
@Tenzin
Sorry, I meant it was a few moments later.
@Elliot
For those who want custom cursors, it’s safer to use ICO or ANI files instead of executable files which may contain viruses.
@Elliot
Sometimes a hard reset can fix issues when the system is frozen. If that doesn’t work, you might need to consider re-imaging the computer.
Do people still download custom cursors nowadays?

I use a program that changes my cursors every few hours. They’re not the easiest to use, but they add a bit of fun to my long screen time.
@Lior
You should try Desktop Destroyer for some stress relief—it lets you interact with your desktop in fun ways.

I miss using Shimejis on my desktop for some added fun.

There used to be so many websites offering custom themes and cursors for Windows. Now it seems everything is behind a paywall.
@Merlin
I remember having loads of themes saved. These days I just tweak the background and some colors.

I use a Hatsune Miku cursor. It’s very cute.
What exactly happened? It’s unlikely that a custom cursor could cause significant problems.

If the cursor was downloaded from an unreliable source along with software to change the cursor, it might indeed cause issues.
@Adair
Would it really take a few months for issues to show up?

It’s not impossible. Consider a scenario where the system is reinstalled and the same cursor is downloaded again, leading to recurring issues.
@Adair
That makes sense.
