Dropped my laptop… now what?

I messed up big time. I’ve only had this laptop (an MSI Katana 15) for about a week. The charging cable was by my feet, and as I got up, it fell about a meter. Now I’m considering sending it back and claiming it came like this, but I don’t know if they’d believe me.`

At least the display is the only thing damaged after that drop. It could’ve been worse.

Agreed.

If the laptop works, you can connect it to a TV or monitor via HDMI and use it like that.

That sucks, but accidents happen. It’s not the seller’s fault, though, so I’d avoid making up stories. Just pay for the display repair.

Honestly, these laptops don’t have the best build quality anyway. The company doesn’t seem to care about consumers, so why should we care about them?

@Cameron
Fair point if the build quality isn’t great, but trying to pass off damage as their fault isn’t cool. If you don’t like their products, just avoid buying from them in the future.

Big companies don’t care about us, so why care about them? Just saying.

They can check if it shipped like that by looking at SSD activity and battery charge cycles. It’s not that easy to fake.

Sorry to hear that! It happens to the best of us. If lying doesn’t work out, consider asking them if they can help with repairs. LCD fixes might not be too expensive.

Did you try: right-click > refresh? :sweat_smile:

That’s rough. You could try sending it back, but only if it’s a big retailer and not an individual seller—that would be unfair to them.

So your laptop is now basically a desktop?

Not really funny, but okay.

This is why you should never leave your laptop in risky spots like table edges. Be grateful the motherboard didn’t get fried like it did with my friend’s laptop after a similar drop.

Since it’s only a week old, doesn’t it have a warranty?

Warranties usually don’t cover accidental damage. They’re for manufacturing defects and such.

I thought warranties cover accidental damage too?

@Tobin
Only if you paid for extra protection plans.

@Tobin
In the US and Europe, standard warranties don’t cover user-caused damage. Extra warranties for that kind of coverage usually cost more.

Oh, I see. Thanks for explaining.
