Nobody said it in the original post, but I was pretty sure it was a layer of dead skin cells from resting palms on the laptop. Not easily visible until wiping it smushed them it together in clumps.

I would recommend finding some kind of sealant for it, though I’ve never cleaned/restored a laptop. I’m still glad you figured it out. I’m sure you already know, but don’t use alcohol next time

It probably wasn’t the alcohol doing the work, pieces of the cloth probably got stuck on the laptop
