Yeah. For example, it doesn’t affect my Rockboxed iPod Classic 5th gen’s plastic front panel.

Nobody said it in the original post, but I was pretty sure it was a layer of dead skin cells from resting palms on the laptop. Not easily visible until wiping it smushed them it together in clumps.
Nah, just rubbed it with a moist cloth… took only 5-10 min
I would recommend finding some kind of sealant for it, though I’ve never cleaned/restored a laptop. I’m still glad you figured it out. I’m sure you already know, but don’t use alcohol next time
