i5 1235U with 16GB RAM. Just curious to see who in this forum has a faster start-up time.
Do you have fast boot enabled?

I always keep that turned off. I’ve run into too many issues with it—sometimes it wouldn’t boot at all, just lights up, and I’d have to hold the power button down to restart.
@Eli
It should really be off by default as it doesn’t make a difference in start-up times if you have a SSD. It tends to cause more problems than it resolves.

Mine was activated, don’t recall ever turning it on
@Eli
Unfortunately, it’s enabled by default.

Oh, I thought you meant it is off by default, not that it should be.

I have a Dell 15 7577 with a 512gb SSD m.2, and my fast boot was always turned on. Should I disable it permanently?
@Cade
I’d recommend turning it off; it barely makes a difference with an SSD, and when enabled, it doesn’t really shut down Windows completely.

Got it, I’ll try turning it off. Also, I heard about holding shift before shutting down to fully close the system. What’s your take on that?
@Cade
From what I know, there’s no difference between shutting down without fast startup and shutting down while holding shift; they’re essentially the same.

It’s funny how it’s always enabled by default on every PC.
@Eli
I’m just worried it might seem like it’s on all the time after a while with fast boot enabled.

I never checked it.

It’s usually enabled by default. You can read more about it for both Windows 10 and 11 online.

You can find it in the BIOS settings.

No, you actually set it through the Control Panel → System → Power Options → Choose what the power button does.
@Blake
Yes, but Fast Boot is also an option in the BIOS on many machines.

That might be the case on newer laptops, but I’ve rarely seen it before.
