How to Remove Sticker Residue from a Laptop?

Hi everyone! I use my laptop for various tasks including watching Netflix and recording my podcast. Previously, I adorned my laptop’s lid with stickers, but now that I’m trying to remove them, I’m left with stubborn residue. I’ve scraped off most of the stickers, but I’m struggling with the leftover sticky mess. Can anyone advise on how to safely remove this residue without damaging the laptop’s surface? Thanks for any tips!

Try using Goo Gone. It’s effective for removing sticker residue and was a staple when I worked in computer recycling. Pair it with a razor blade for best results, but be cautious to avoid scratches.

For stubborn or etched-in residues, we used to employ a sander, but for stickers, Goo Gone with a razor blade is usually sufficient. Just handle the blade with care to prevent any damage.

A plastic scraper with a handle might be a safer alternative to a metal razor, as it’s less likely to damage the laptop.

Absolutely, that’s a safer option.

Isopropyl alcohol can be effective. Apply it to the residue, then scrape gently with an old credit card or similar. It may take some effort but typically works well.

I second this method.

Agreed. Just add a bit of the alcohol on the residue and start scraping. It does take some time but the results are worth it.

Goof Off is another good option. Use it with a plastic scraper and a microfiber cloth for cleaning up. Afterward, clean off any residual Goof Off with isopropyl alcohol.

I usually use IPA to remove any leftover Goof Off.

Is Goof Off the actual product name?

@Storm
Yes, Goof Off is the brand name. It’s widely available.

@Storm
Both Goo Gone and Goof Off are available at most home improvement stores and work similarly for this type of job.

I’ve had good results with isopropyl alcohol for removing sticky residues.

IPA (isopropyl alcohol, not beer) is my go-to for cleaning sticky messes.

Just to clarify, I mean isopropyl alcohol.

I recommend using a commercial adhesive remover. These are specifically designed to break down glues and are more effective than home remedies like alcohol or water, which might not work for all types of glue.

MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) is very effective at removing adhesives, but use it with caution due to its strength.

Would Goo Gone be too strong for this?

If using a razor blade, opt for plastic ones to reduce the risk of scratching your laptop.
