Actually in some cases it’s possible

I mean it would work. You data would eventually just spill out onto your motherboard. Just cut the least amount possible for the most amount of GBs.

Iirc there are some that you can do this with, mainly because it was a smaller size printed onto the standard size pcb

Actually, as funny and sketchy as it sounds, I did a fair share of cutting on Samsung PM991/PM991a and WD SN520/SN530 drives just for this exact purpose. Oldest one is approaching a 4 year mark (SN520) and works perfectly in a ThinkPad T495. It was done either to install a second SSD into the 2242 WWAN modem slot, or install it there if the main M.2 slot was damaged.
For some stupid reason, 2242 variant of the same drive was 3 times more expensive than a standard 2280 variant, so I just “made it fit”, clean cut, cleaning up the edges and using kapton tape for layer insulation from the screw mounting side.
Super common in the ThinkPad community, but works only on select models of drives that have all of their electronics fitting in the 42mm from the slot. Which basically means: WD SN520/SN530, PM991/991a, Hynix BC501, and maybe some more modern drives.
can’t do anything. buy a m.2 enclosure, make it a portable ssd

Remove that bolt.

Don’t know if it will make it over those inductor coils (that’s what I think those gray boxes are?).
@Zayn
it will fit i assure you

My thoughts also.

Should probably get an enclosure anyway. Helps with cloning a drive. You can even treat it kind of like a removable media drive, where you insert and eject an SSD as needed. Gives a use for all those old discarded 128/256GB drives.
I used kapton tape for a similar problem before, and its worked fine.
