There’s technically a SATA port, but there’s no cable and no place to put the drive.

Configurations of the Precision 3551 that support a 2.5" drive have a smaller 68 Wh battery (Model 3HWPP).

So I guess I’ll buy the SSD with an enclosure to use it externally.
Yes, above the WiFi card seems to be a slot for something like a 2230 (the smallest SSD m.2 NVMe). They reach a max capacity of about 1TB, maybe 2.

Thanks, let me look it up.
@Casey
Note that it is labeled as WWAN/LTE/S. The WWAN/LTE/S port on your laptop motherboard is not designed to support an M.2 SSD. While both M.2 SSDs and WWAN cards might use the M.2 form factor, their functionality and pin configurations are different.

If you get it to work, the speeds are terrible. In some cases, it’s the same as USB2.
@Shannon
If you use an external one with an old USB cable, yes. But the internal ones can reach speeds similar to a DRAM-less equivalent Gen 2280, with up to 6000 MB/s sequential write and a bit more in sequential read, if the slot allows it. In ideal conditions, which you will likely never reach.
It may be the WWAN slot.
There is a small form factor slot next to the WiFi card, where the WiFi antenna (white wire) is located.
Technically, you might be able to put a small M.2 in the WWAN slot, albeit a small 2230 card. There’s also another SATA header just to the left of the wireless card, but they likely traded the spot for that large battery. I’ve never encountered a laptop with a 97Wh battery.
This laptop was configurable with a 2230/2280 M.2 SSD and/or a 2.5" HDD. Yours has the larger 97 Wh battery, which takes up the space where the 2.5" HDD would normally go.
According to this, there is another SATA under the battery. It uses the old 2.5" SSD type for the second SSD.

It isn’t under the battery; it’s an option. You can have the longer, high-capacity 97WH battery OR the shorter 68WH battery with a 2.5" caddy. Imagine how thick that laptop would be if it was under it lol.
