POV: when big companies upgrade laptops

image
Companies typically sell off the old ones in bulk, flooding the market with one specific model of very pricey niche enterprise laptop I paid $300 for a Thinkpad P1 w/ a 6-core Xeon E-2276M, 64GB RAM, Nvidia Quadro T2000 This was $2800 in 2020

Buy me one and i’ll pay for shipping for that price!

hello i’m your friendly shipping sender. ill send u for free, just pay $120 for shipping to my untraceable account through an uncancellable method, or google pay gift cards! you choose

@Zev
no hey fuck that guy, sell it to me instead. ill wire you the funds right now, double what you’re asking. i just need you to send $50 first so that i can unlock my funds from the government, then i will reimburse the $50 and pay you double for the shipping.

@Remy
No, fuck both of you, I’m a broke flight student in college. I don’t need it (I have 10 thinkpads) but I want it. I’m in college and I’ve been to the Yamato Lab and NC r&d buildings, therefore I should have it

Cheap commodity laptops made out of breaky plastic that dies a week out of warranty vs a used business model made with metal casing that will last years.

how would something like this hold up to say a 3060?

It wouldn’t. 3060 would demolish that

Yeah I once threw my GPU at a laptop and it broken the screen

@Keller
Reddit is to relatable for me

It’s the pro version of the 1650Ti so it should be comparable to the 1650

RTX cards were essentially the succesor to the Quadro lineup. The RTX cards would demolish this gpu.

Where do you buy them, and what to look out for.

Ebay is a good place to buy decommisioned business laptops. I have an older Dell Precision workstation laptop that’s still serving me that i got in that manner.

@Parker
which models to look out for?

Like not many will need the T200 GPU in this for example, or the 64GB of RAM, 32GB will be plenty. I remember looking up the thinkpad range last year, cant remember any of it.

Where does one look for these deals

Thats a great buy!

I do the same thing with Dell Latitudes. They last for years and years maybe needing a battery replacement at some point. The sellers will show pictures of the service tag so you can verify the warranty status. My last machine had 2 years of pro-support left…

@Quinn
That’s interesting bc I bought an XPS 9360 used as well and it has lasted forever! Im sure I will not be able to find another dollar deal to this again here in Tokyo.

What laptop would you recommend as an upgrade for a future laptop? Do you have any in mind?

@Quinn
How did you get the warranty transferred to your name?

Warranties are tied to the machine. As long as it is not stolen Dell will honor it.

Source: Had issues with an Optiplex that had 3 weeks of warranty left.
