Purchased a laptop from a scrap store for 1000 INR and it won't turn on. Any suggestions?

I bought this laptop from a scrap store for 1000 INR, but I’m having trouble getting it to turn on. Can anyone help me figure out what to do?

There could be several reasons why it’s not powering on, including a faulty motherboard.

What steps can I take to try to fix it?

It’s a bit complex but start by checking the battery and power adapter. Basic troubleshooting might point to issues with the charging port, power button, or motherboard. If these don’t help, a technician might be needed.

@Micah
Is it possible to charge the battery using an alternative method, like from a bike alternator?

Please don’t attempt that. It’s better to take the laptop to a technician and explain that it hasn’t been used in a while and now won’t start.

@Micah
Why shouldn’t he mention it was bought from a scrap shop?

Some technicians might take advantage of the situation if they think the owner isn’t aware of the laptop’s history.

Are you serious about that charging method?

You might want to consider returning it to the scrapyard.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot your laptop:

  1. Inspect it for physical damage like burns or water damage.
  2. Try turning it on with the charger and check for any indicator lights.
  3. Remove the battery and try to power on with just the charger.
  4. Check the RAM and reseat it if necessary.
  5. If none of these work, you might need to disassemble it for a closer look at the internal components.

If you’re in Delhi NCR and want to resell it for 500 INR, let me know. I’m looking for a project to work on.

That might not be worth the effort to repair.

If it’s been off for a while, it may be in deep sleep mode. Try waking it by holding ctrl + alt + power for 3 minutes.

Is that actually a thing, or are you joking?

Have you tried plugging it in?

Yes, I have.

When you plug it in, do any lights come on? If the battery is dead, you might still be able to use it with the correct power adapter.

@Jin
There’s no indication of power, but the adapter light turns off when I switch off the plug.

What are the specs? If it doesn’t turn on, you might still salvage the HDD and RAM from it.
