RTX 5090 and 5080 laptops spotted online… 16GB VRAM cut down on flagship GPU?

I think I might give up on gaming laptops altogether.

It’s tough for those of us who need portability. If I didn’t need it, I’d definitely go for a desktop instead.

If you work for a company that provides powerful workstation laptops, they’re often a better option. They also tend to have solid battery life.

I’ll probably just get a Steam Deck or something similar when my current laptop gives out. I don’t need high-end graphics on the go, just something functional.

@Wilder
That’s a good plan. Handhelds like the Steam Deck are great alternatives as long as you’re fine with more modest performance.

Why don’t they just make the laptops bigger? Wouldn’t people be fine with a heavier laptop for 45% more performance?

Power draw becomes an issue. These 175W GPUs can push total system draw past 300W. It’s hard to make a portable power supply for that.

@Zan
At that point, powerful gaming laptops feel pointless—just weaker desktops that you rarely move anyway.

@Zan
Alienware’s m18 has a 360W power brick already.

Who would want to carry an extra backpack just for their laptop and power brick?

It’s smaller than you’d think—about 2x4x8 inches. My only complaint is that the cord is a bit short.

@Finley
Short cables can be frustrating, for sure.

@Finley
What’s the weight like?

The brick itself is light, maybe around 2lbs. But the laptop? That’s a chunky 10lbs.

I’ve got an M18 R1, and I joke that my 330W brick doubles as a self-defense weapon!

They’ll never put a -102 class die in a laptop. Even massive laptops with dual 1080s didn’t get the 1080Ti. Nvidia just doesn’t allow it.

@Charlie
Why not start putting Radeon cards in laptops instead?

AMD doesn’t make huge laptop GPUs either. The 7900M is about 75% of the Navi 7900XTX die, similar to the laptop 4080 in performance.

@Charlie
If that’s the case, laptops are pointless. They should stop at the RTX 40 series until they fix thermal issues and battery life. What’s the point of more power if it only lasts an hour?
