I’ve noticed these cable-like bumps on my MacBook. They’re visible, but I can barely feel them unless I touch them very lightly. Could this be an early sign of hardware issues, or is it just a normal paint defect? Thanks in advance for any advice.
It looks like it could be from an impact on the side. You might want to consider opening the laptop to check if any internal components are damaged.
Not sure about internal problems, but it could leave marks on your screen if there’s no screen protector.

Just so you know, it’s generally not recommended to use a screen protector on a MacBook.
Yes and no. It might not be serious, but better to check inside to be sure.
It could go either way. I’d recommend checking inside for any damage. If everything looks fine, just be careful moving forward.
What’s the year and model of your MacBook? From what I can see, battery swelling is the first thing that comes to mind. You should remove the bottom cover and check the battery. Most newer models need a pentalobe screwdriver for this. If the battery is swelling, disconnect it and replace it. IFixit has good guides for that.
Check your manual to see if the battery is under that area. A swollen battery could be the reason for those bumps, and if that’s the case, you’ll need to replace it soon.
As a quick fix, you could put some clear tape over it to prevent any scratches on the screen.
Honestly, I’m more worried about the fact that you’re using your MacBook on a blanket. That’s bad for cooling.
