What are these strange squares appearing on my screen

When I turn on my laptop, strange squares appear after a few minutes, making it unresponsive to the mouse or any inputs. I have to hold the power button to shut it down every time. What could be causing this

It sounds like your graphics processing unit (GPU) might be failing.

That’s unfortunate, but thanks for the quick response!

These issues are typically related to a failing GPU, which would likely require a motherboard replacement or a new laptop altogether.

Understood, thanks for the advice!

It seems your GPU has reached the end of its life, unfortunately.

It’s sad but I guess it’s time to say goodbye. Thanks for confirming!

Yes, it’s tough especially considering the cost of replacements. Artifacting like this typically means the GPU can’t be repaired.

@Jael
Indeed, it’s always the electronics giving us headaches. Thanks for the help!

Absolutely, they do work hard though! Best of luck with your next steps, whether it’s repair or a new purchase.

@Jael
Thank you, I’ll make sure the next one has a pampered life!

It’s also going to be an expensive fix.

@Graydon
You’re correct on the spelling there.

What you’re seeing are called artifacts, which are signs of a dying graphics card. Unfortunately, there’s no fix to completely resolve this issue.

I appreciate the straightforward explanation. Is there a typical cause for this, given my laptop isn’t very old

@Jay
Artifacts can be caused by overheating, VRAM failure, or other hardware issues. Even if it’s not old, these problems can still occur depending on usage and general hardware quality.

Thanks for shedding light on this. It’s very helpful!

You’re welcome! Always here to help!

Looks like your GPU is failing.
