This happens when users don’t open the lid from the center and twist the hinge too much. That’s why they break.
Looks like this laptop was opened by a bear or something.

Plastic becomes brittle when repeatedly exposed to heat over time.

This is due to cheap manufacturing. Weak aluminum and plastic can’t handle hinge stress long-term.
The most ridiculous hinge problem I’ve ever seen.

Wait… they glued the hinge onto plastic without screws? That’s wild.

Cheap hinges are just part of planned obsolescence. Don’t support these companies.
They don’t make them like they used to.
My Lenovo laptop is seven years old and still going strong, except for the D key. It’s a plastic laptop too.
I’ve had 4 laptops (3 Asus, 1 Lenovo ThinkPad E series) and never had hinge issues. Why do so many people have this problem?

I’ve had 3 HPs and 2 old Asus laptops, and none of them had hinge problems. Maybe I’ve been lucky?
@Joss
Are modern laptops worse in quality? I just got a new one, and I’m hoping it’ll last at least 7 years.

It depends on the model you bought.

What about the Asus VivoBook? Is it a reliable option?
@Darcy
I doubt it’ll last 7 years. The battery will definitely need replacing, and it may slow down over time.

My old VivoBook from 2016 lasted 7 years before the keyboard failed. Hoping my new one holds up the same!
@Darcy
Anything can be repaired, but sometimes it costs more than the laptop itself. Just take good care of it.
This is why I only buy business-grade laptops. They’re built to last.
