Why is there so much unused space in my laptop even with an optical disc drive present?
This happens more often than you think with cheap low spec laptop devices!

Exactly. Chassis is mostly reusable in other models.

Is a i5 low spec?

Depends on the generation. The i5 is considered mid tier while i7 and i9 are high tier if comparing the same generation. An i7 from 2018 can easily get outclassed by an i3 from 2024 when gaming.
@Ozzy
I mean this is a i5 from 2016

That doesn’t give any information about the CPU itself. I assume it might be a 5th generation or a 6th, which might have had a good performance back in 2016, but that i5 doesn’t stand a chance to the latest generation equivalent of it.
@Reilly
Its a i5 7200U, and it has plenty of performance

I’m familiar with that CPU. Recently I refurbished a machine with such a processor. It’s an energy efficient 7th gen CPU, the U is sometimes referred to underpowered, but it’s more like ‘Ultra-low power’ which means it had a lower power consumption than other similar chips.

I don’t know what you all use your laptops for, but again, I very rarely max it out

no offense to the people commenting here, but do we really care if the CPU does everything the person who posted this wants it to?
@Vic
Clearly not, obviously I need a 6 core Ryzen CPU that uses 60W and a 60 class GPU for 1080p YouTube

People use laptops for CPU or GPU intensive tasks, like video editing, 3D modeling, virtualization, gaming
@Jessie
I use it for YouTube and so

Machine learning, generative AI, coding, … Every user buys a laptop for their needs.
@Reilly
That’s very true, that i5 fits my needs well

If you rarely max it out you can’t expect the company to use the max physical space in a chassis.
@Axel
Well they do max out the prices for everything yes?
@Reilly
It means ultra low voltage. Typical tdp is 15 Watts and the turbo boost gets it to 25 watts.

I wouldn’t describe a ULV 2 core 4 thread CPU from Q3 2016 as having ‘plenty of performance’. It is absolutely fine for a mobile typewriter or media consumption device. It is very power efficient and a lot of laptops from the time had 12hr usable battery life when new.
