Do you always block the IR emitter? Maybe just disable it in Windows when not in use.

I only uncover it when using face recognition. It’s a sliding privacy cover that lets me still use the camera if needed.
@Ali
Makes sense. Could it be some strange presence detection feature? Haven’t seen that before though.
Grabs tinfoil hat
They’re boosting the emitter to spy on us!
(joking)
That’s really annoying, though. Best bet is replacing it and repositioning.
Why not just cover the IR camera instead of the emitter? Why even block the emitter?

The emitter’s on the side, and the IR camera is in between the regular camera and the emitter. Covering the camera also partially blocks the others.
It’s a feature—Billy really wants a good look at your face.
Thermal radiation sometimes overlaps with the infrared spectrum.
You’ve got a phone with a front camera watching you all the time. What’s the difference? Hackers could target your phone too.

Makes sense if it’s a work laptop. Still, reducing surveillance opportunities is always a good idea.

Exactly. Also, the microphone is far more valuable for spying. Good luck trying to block that effectively.
IR is heat energy, so it melting the cover makes sense.
Do people seriously believe they’re being watched through their cameras?

There was a guy who messed with scammers. While pretending to be dumb, he hacked their cameras and showed them their own faces.
I don’t understand why people even bother with these privacy covers.

Do you mean the privacy covers or the IR for face recognition?
