How suitable is this laptop I received as a gift for coding and gaming

I intend to use it for coding and gaming. I’m extremely disappointed it doesn’t have a backlit keyboard and the microphone glitches when I use it on Discord. Can anyone help me resolve these issues?

Be appreciative; it’s from a decent brand. Consider getting a budget USB microphone from an online store to improve your experience.

I’m thankful, but it’s only been a week and I’m already encountering glitches. I want to ensure I’m not missing something or if it’s a known issue with this model.

@Oli
Microphone glitches and the lack of a backlit keyboard are minor issues. You can resolve them by using an external microphone and additional lighting. However, overheating to the point of being untouchable is a more serious issue.

@Zeek
It overheats significantly. Is there a way to mitigate this?

Try setting it to low power mode and unplugging the laptop to see if it cools down.

Lift the laptop slightly off the surface to improve airflow. You can use something like Lego blocks as a temporary solution to elevate the laptop for better ventilation.

Consider applying new thermal paste. Look up a guide for your specific laptop model on how to apply thermal paste; it’s a practical fix and usually doesn’t void warranties unless you damage something during the process.

It’s a decent laptop overall. If the lack of a backlit keyboard bothers you, a simple lamp could be an effective solution.

Will it be adequate for both coding and gaming? I’m not ungrateful, just trying to set realistic expectations.

@Oli
For coding, absolutely. For gaming, it depends on the specific games you’re interested in.

I’m interested in playing Valorant and Marvel Rivals.

Marvel Rivals might not run well due to a compatibility issue with the graphics chip, but Valorant should run without any problems.

It’s not essential, but I’m curious if there’s even a possibility for compatibility or if it could work.

It’s a really solid machine for non-intensive tasks. If you’re having microphone issues, updating your drivers might help, or you could get a low-cost microphone online. I would have been thrilled to receive such a gift in my earlier days.

It’s a capable laptop with options for RAM upgrades and a long-lasting battery. The CPU is sufficient for coding and can handle less demanding games. For more resource-intensive games, consider using a cloud gaming service.

@Nyx
You might want to try GeForce Now for cloud gaming.

It’s quite good, honestly. You’ll get decent battery life and performance that can handle light gaming and moderate coding projects. You might even manage some basic video editing. It’s particularly well-suited for students and has good support for Linux if you’re into that.

That’s a fantastic laptop for academic and professional use! The latest Intel CPUs perform well, and the 16:10 screen ratio is a significant improvement over standard screens. While the lack of a backlit keyboard is a drawback, it’s manageable. Your microphone issue sounds like it could be resolved with a driver update or by tweaking your software settings.

What type of games are you looking to play? For intensive gaming, cloud services might be your best bet. For coding, performance should be adequate. If the microphone continues to be an issue, an external one might be necessary.
