Is it ok to leave my laptop plugged in for extended amounts of time?

asking because im not sure if it effects my battery.

im using a lenovo running windows 11

Leaving any Lithium-Ion battery fully charged (or discharged) all the time is not great for it. For max longevity you try to keep it between 20% - 80% charge.

Need an hours rating

For an extra 2 hours? Doesn’t matter
Extra 2 hours a day every day, yes that will

Some have a battery 80% cap in bios that helps

That is bad for your battery. Over time this might cause faster degradation and battery swelling.

extended, as in a week? yeah, it’s fine.
extended, as in for months? NOT ok.

Use the Lenovo Vantage battery saver option that caps charging at 80%. My battery is still great after 24 months.

Put a charge limit of 80 percent on it, should be fine

It depends on the laptop. In principle it’s bad for the battery but some laptops have a feature where it detects extended AC usage and adjusts the battery charge to compensate.

Yes, better to cap at 80% charge but otherwise, yes, plug it in with original charger and leave it. Its not constantly charging, it shuts off. Its just that default has it charging to max, and that last bit to get to 100% can cause more wear over time vs stopping at say 80%. Same deal with letting it drain below 20%.

And for those laptops where u cant cap battery charge, well,i just changed battery in my 2016 model after it finally got down to 50-60% of original max whr capacity over 7 yrs of mostly desktop (plugged in) usage.
