My Omen laptop's M.2 drive stopped booting… any tips?

Have you tried testing it in another computer?

Not yet, but I’m about to try that now.

Good call. There’s a small chance your M.2 slot is the issue rather than the drive itself.

If it’s an Optane drive, your main storage might be a hard drive with data partially cached on the Optane. This can cause issues if the Optane fails. Try removing the Optane drive; your HDD might still be okay.

@Vesper
Checked a video on disassembling this laptop, and the Optane drive is the only drive in it.

In that case, just replace it with a proper NVMe drive :joy:

I just ordered a WD Black SN850X. I’ll hold onto this Optane for now and maybe send it in for data recovery later :man_facepalming:t5:

@Vale
What’s the Optane’s size? In my experience, Samsung SSDs are super reliable. My Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB has held up amazingly well despite heavy usage. Tried pushing it?

The Optane is about 500GB; the new one I got is 1TB.

@Vale
Optane was meant to speed up slower drives but wasn’t really designed as a primary drive. They discontinued it for a reason—new NVMe drives can handle 5,000+ MB/s reads and writes easily.

Makes sense! Bought this laptop as a gift for my wife a few years back. Here’s the info for the drive:

Intel Optane Memory H10
MODEL: HBRPEKNX02020AH
SN: BTTE02320YV4512B

Intel drive, so it’s probably dead.

Bummer! Might have to send it in for data recovery.

Intel drives tend to fail a lot. If you didn’t delete anything important, that’s probably what happened.

@Sky
Nope, didn’t delete anything.
