I believe this damage happened in airport security, but the screen itself isn’t visibly cracked. It seems like internal damage. Does anyone know what exactly is wrong and how much it might cost to repair?
The screen is cracked, but it’s the LCD beneath the outer layer that’s damaged. You’ll need to replace the entire screen.
If your laptop was under $500, it might be more cost-effective to buy a new one rather than replace the screen. Alternatively, you could connect it to an external monitor via HDMI and use it as a desktop.

I’m on a tight budget, so I’ll go with the cheapest option.

Search for your laptop model’s screen replacement and compare the prices with those of a cheap PC monitor to see what’s more economical.
@Jay
Thanks! Would replacing the screen myself be feasible with no prior experience, or should I seek professional help?

It depends on the laptop model. Some are easier to work on than others.

You might find a repair guide for your specific model on iFixit, which has tutorials for various repairs.
Cool wallpaper! But seriously, it looks like your LCD might be damaged even if the glass isn’t.

Thanks, the ‘wallpaper’ was an unexpected update from airport security. I’m gathering it’s the LCD that’s the issue. Planning to fix it myself.
This seems to happen a lot with airport security handling. Definitely looks like internal screen damage.
You need to replace the LCD screen. Depending on the laptop, this could be fairly expensive.

How expensive are we talking about?

The cost can vary, but you’re likely looking at around $50-$100 for a new screen, not including labor if you don’t do it yourself.
@Kelby
I found some screens for my model around $50. I might try to replace it myself by following a tutorial.
It’s definitely the internal display that’s damaged. The outer glass might be intact, but the LCD underneath is what’s broken.
It’s clear that the internal part of your screen has cracked. The damage point usually starts where the black spot is most intense.
